When I contemplate the phrase “it takes a village,” I envision a tapestry of individuals weaving subtle and profound impacts on their community. They are so valuable to the village that even one day without them would create a palpable void.

I think of individuals who effortlessly extend their reach to make a significant difference. Yet, their absence is felt by all, underscoring the impact they make to our village. She navigates the day of daily routines with determination, often without fanfare.

In my village, that person is our nurse, affectionately called Nurse Lauren.

In my village, that person is our nurse, affectionately called Nurse Lauren. Her bustling office is opened before school even starts and stays open way past the end bell. She serves students, parents and staff with a warm smile and support. It doesn’t matter if she is dealing with a small or significant issue, she remains steady, cool and graceful under pressure.

She is that magician who seamlessly pulls rabbits out of their hat. Her wealth of knowledge, extensive networking and compassion are the tools she uses to face the challenges that come her way.

At any given moment, you can see a myriad of scenes unfolding in her office: a new student seeking refuge and trying to make sense of this new school culture, a student that just needs a listening ear, a teacher seeking assistance or a warm cup of coffee, a parent conferencing with the nurse, or a student warming their lunch or sitting quietly waiting to talk about the bubbling feeling that lies just below the surface.

Nurse Lauren is a vital thread in the tapestry of our community.

Nurse Lauren is a vital thread in the tapestry of our community. Her ability to connect and fulfill needs enriches our village. So as Teacher Appreciation Week approaches, I want to say thank you to Nurse Lauren and all the school nurses who heal seen and unseen wounds through their dedication and compassion.
